Privacy Policy

Information we collect

• Account information: the email address and password you register with, and your subscription tier and billing status.
• Family records you enter: family and student names, grade levels, lessons, grades, attendance, reading logs, instructional time, calendar entries, and any notes or photos you upload.
• Payment information: handled entirely by our payment processor (Stripe). We never see or store full card numbers.
• Basic technical data needed to operate and secure the service, such as log records of requests to our servers.

How we use information

• To provide the product: store and display the records you create, generate portfolios and reports, and enforce your plan limits.
• To process payments and manage your subscription.
• To send you essential service messages (for example, billing notices and account or data-retention notifications).
• To send optional product updates and our blog, only if you opt in, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Children's privacy (COPPA)

Chalk and Chart is a tool for parents and guardians. Student records and any optional student logins are created by the parent, who provides consent for that information. We do not knowingly let children register on their own, we minimize the student information we collect, and we do not use it for behavioral advertising.

Your California privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to request a copy of it, and to request its deletion. You can export your data and delete your account from within the product, and you can also contact us to exercise these rights. We do not sell or share your personal information, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising any right.

Email and marketing (CAN-SPAM)

Marketing email is opt-in only and uses double opt-in. Every marketing message identifies us as the sender and includes a way to unsubscribe, which we honor promptly. Essential account, billing, and data-retention emails are not marketing and are sent regardless of your marketing preference.

Education records (FERPA awareness)

You, the parent, own your family records. We act only as a processor that stores and displays the information you choose to enter, and we handle it according to this policy.

Data retention and archival

While your account is active, we keep your records so the product works. If your account is cancelled or suspended, your data is archived rather than deleted immediately. We retain archived data for a limited window and send a notice before any permanent deletion, with a link to download an export. You can restore, keep archived, or delete your data when you reactivate.

Security

We protect your data in transit and at rest and limit access to it. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to safeguard your information and to respond quickly if an issue arises.
